— In her newest column, MaryBeth Matzek looks at the exporting strategy followed by Bernsten International, a Madison-based manufacturer of survey and wayfaring markers.

The firm first got into exporting by accident more than 30 years ago when it received a custom order from Saudi Arabia. Later, Bernsten president Rhonda Rushing wanted a more deliberate plan for the company’s exporting endeavors

She turned to the ExporTech program, which is supported by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. and offered by the Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership. The company focused on Canada as its top strategic market.

— The WEDC has announced a trade trip to Mexico in March.

The agency has partnered with the Council of Great Lakes Governors on the seven-day trip, which includes stops in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.

Mexico is the state’s second-largest export partner; the WEDC has also scheduled a trade trip to Canada — its largest trade partner — later that same month.

— Wisconsin’s monthly unemployment rate in November was the lowest it’s been since September 2008, but quarterly figures show the state continues to lag the rest of the country in new jobs.

Wisconsin added 16,500 private sector jobs in November as the monthly unemployment rate dropped to 5.2 percent from 5.4 percent in October. Combined with an upward revision in the number of jobs created in October, DWD Secretary Reggie Newson said the state has now recovered all of the private sector jobs it lost during the ”great recession.”

That’s based on monthly job estimates the Walker administration has previously warned can vary wildly. For example, the job numbers for October have been revised upward by 6,900.

Meanwhile, the more reliable quarterly numbers reported to the Bureau of Labor Statistics show the state gained 35,021 private-sector jobs for the 12-month period that ended in June. The growth rate of 1.5 percent put Wisconsin 32nd and behind the national rate of 2.3 percent.
