Mt. Ashwabay: Thunderbird warrior challenge trail run set to take over Mt. Ashwabay this June

Bayfield, Wis. (April 3, 2025) – The highly anticipated Thunderbird Warrior Challenge Trail Run is coming to the Mt. Ashwabay Outdoor Recreation Area, in collaboration with Camp Benesi, on Saturday, June 14, 2025. This thrilling event will offer participants of all abilities the chance to run through some of the most stunning landscapes in the Northwoods, with courses ranging from 5K to 50K.

Camp Benesi is a non-profit recreational retreat located in the serene Lake Superior region, dedicated to honoring the memory of Master Sergeant Jonathan Jay Dunbar, who tragically lost his life in Syria on March 30, 2018. The event’s name honors Sgt. Dunbar whose Ojibwe name was Waabishkebinesi or White Thunderbird.

Master Sargent Dunbar had a deep love for the Northwoods and Lake Superior. When he returned home after serving overseas, this was his place of peace. He found deep peace and healing here that he couldn’t explain, but it helped him recenter and heal.

Established by his family and friends, Camp Benesi offers veterans and Gold Star families a peaceful environment to heal and connect with others who share similar experiences. Guests are welcomed at no cost, and all expenses for travel, lodging, meals, and activities are covered. The camp provides a variety of outdoor activities aimed at fostering relaxation, healing, and community among participants.

The trail run features a mix of rolling trails, technical singletrack, and panoramic vistas of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands. Runners will explore diverse terrains, including old-growth maple stands and sandy pine forests, with challenging climbs and descents through glacial topography. Notable highlights include passing the historic Nourse Sugarbush State Natural Area and taking in breathtaking views from Mt. Ashwabay.

In addition to the race, the day promises fun for the whole family with food, vendors, games, and entertainment. The challenge will kick off at 6:00 AM with the 50K trail run, followed by the 25K and 10K races at 8:00 AM, and a 5K fun run and obstacle course at 9:00 AM.

Notably, this event is also a chance to honor veterans and first responders, with discounts for these groups and free entry for active-duty military personnel. On-site camping is available for those looking to immerse themselves in the event and the beautiful natural surroundings.

Event registration is now open, with race prices ranging from $35 for the 5K fun run to $120 for the 50K.

All proceeds will benefit Camp Benesi and Mt. Ashwabay Outdoor Recreation Area.
