Milwaukee, WI – The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation has announced that Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, Professor of Health Policy at Stanford University, Director of the University’s Center for Economics and Demography of Health and Aging, and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economics Research, is a 2024 Bradley Prize winner.
Now in its 20th year, the Bradley Prize is awarded to individuals whose extraordinary work exemplifies the Foundation’s mission to restore, strengthen, and protect the principles and institutions of American exceptionalism. Bhattacharya will receive the award at the Bradley Prizes ceremony on Tuesday, May 21st at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.
“Jay is a visionary who stands for the integrity of scientific debate and the promotion of sound public policy. During the most challenging times of the covid-19 pandemic, he defended Americans’ abilities to make informed choices in the face of immense pressure,” said Rick Graber, president of The Bradley Foundation. “He did not conform to the prevailing orthodoxies about aspects of the pandemic that we now know were often fostered without full access to or analysis of data. Jay’s relentless pursuit of scientific freedom has benefitted millions. We look forward to celebrating Jay’s remarkable work at the Prizes ceremony.”
As in the past, this year’s award winners were chosen by the Bradley Prizes Selection Committee, after careful review ofover 60 distinguished nominations.Each award carries a stipend of $250,000.
Bhattacharya is an internationally recognized authority in the fields of medicine, economics and health research policy. He has given special attention to advancing the health and well-being of vulnerable populations, with an emphasis on the role of government programs and biomedical innovation. He co-authored the Great Barrington Declaration in 2020, which stated health policy during the covid-19 pandemic should protect the most vulnerable Americans while allowing healthy individuals to resume their normal lives.
