Flad Architects: UW Health Transplant Clinic earns 2 national awards

The UW Health Pleasant T. Rowland Transplant Clinic at University Hospital has earned a pair of national design awards for outstanding renovation of an existing space and use of evidence-based design.

The new clinic, which was designed by Flad Architects’ Madison office and opened in September 2022, has earned the top prize as Gold Winner of the Healthcare Design 14th annual Remodel/Renovation Competition. In addition, the Center for Health Design has honored the clinic with the Silver Touchstone Award, which recognizes a commitment to using the evidence-based design process in the built environment by engaging stakeholders to improve outcomes. Both awards will be presented at the annual Healthcare Design Conference on Nov. 6 in New Orleans.

Flad worked with UW Health to design the new transplant clinic at University Hospital as well as a new hospital entry and supporting spaces. This renovation of one of the nation’s oldest and largest transplant centers consolidated a full spectrum of patient services in one location, creating a streamlined experience for everyone involved in the crucial, life-giving process of organ transplantation.

The clinic is named after Rowland, the founder of Middleton-based American Girl company, whose $10 million gift helped make the new clinic possible after she underwent a kidney transplant at University Hospital in 2012.
