MILWAUKEE (September 7th, 2023) – Sunday, September 10th marks the beginning of National Suicide Prevention Week. Lakefront Brewery is joining forces with a nationwide coalition of brewers for a suicide prevention awareness initiative inspired by O.H.S.O Brewing in Phoenix. O.H.S.O owner Jon Lane had lost family and friends to suicide, and even had ideations himself. He credits the stranger he spoke to after dialing 988 for saving his life. “Life is short, but it’s precious. Let’s do what we can to help each other and make it longer. That’s why I urge you to support suicide prevention by spreading the word about 988”, says Lane.
In July of 2020, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) formally designated 988 as a nationwide 3-digit lifeline for mental health crisis and suicide prevention services. Lakefront sees their Save A Weiss 988 beer as a way to bring awareness to the service that provides a listening ear to anyone that needs it, at any time.
In addition to joining the collaboration on a national level, Lakefront will also be supporting the cause locally. Starting Sunday, September 10th, through Sunday, September 17th, $1 of every pint sold of their Save A Weiss German-style wheat ale will be donated to the AFSP Wisconsin chapter. The AFSP organization is focused on eliminating the loss of life from suicide by delivering innovative prevention programs, educating the public, raising funds for suicide research, and reaching out to those who have lost someone to suicide.
Help Lakefront Brewery, O.H.S.O Brewery, and all the other collaborating breweries spread the word about the 988 suicide prevention line. It could literally save a life. Learn more about the 988 lifeline by clicking here.
Lakefront notes that they will be closed for a private event on Monday, September 11th, therefore they will be extending their week-long AFSP donation drive for an additional day.
