Milwaukee Public Schools: Jobs offer flexibility for families

(MILWAUKEE) —  Workers looking for jobs with hours that accommodate family life can find them with Milwaukee Public Schools, which is holding the third in a series of four monthly job fairs on Wednesday, August 16, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The district has immediate openings for a variety of positions; many of the entry-level positions available offer professional career pathways for advancement. Openings include jobs in food service for the breakfast and lunch programs.

Other openings include school nurse, teacher, substitute teacher, teaching assistant (or paraprofessional), school safety assistants, maintenance and operations in building services, and children’s health assistants (CHAs), who provide support to students with disabilities.

Part-time and full-time jobs are available. Full-time employment is 30 hours a week, and all full-time employees receive benefits that include health insurance, paid sick time, and a pension. MPS job openings are conveniently available in neighborhoods across the city.

A number of openings have summers off, including jobs in food service. Hours that coincide with their children’s school-day schedules appeals to many MPS employees.

“I worked when my kids were in school; I was off when my kids were off. It was perfect for a young family,” said Beth Peterson, now a 24-year employee who has risen through the ranks to become a central kitchen manager for MPS.

“If there’s a snow day, they’re not scrambling to find day care,” because food service workers also have a snow day, Peterson noted.

The daytime hours also appealed to Karlene Berg, who recently completed her MPS food service management training.

A graduate of the culinary program at Milwaukee Area Technical College, Berg observed that restaurant work falls on nights and weekends, and often on holidays. “I like being up early, and I like getting out early. These are my kind of hours,” working in food service for MPS, Berg said.

The job is ideal for her in other ways, as well. “I love working with children, I’ve always wanted to work with MPS, and I always wanted to be a manager,” Berg said.
