(Waukesha, WI) – Waukesha County Parks and Land Use is happy to announce that Town of Brookfield drains are to be available for adoption starting on World Water Day, March 22, as the latest addition to Waukesha County’s Adopt-A-Drain program. A total of seven communities are now keeping local storm drains clean through this program.
“Drain adopters are making a big difference in our neighborhoods,” said County Executive Paul Farrow. “Clean storm drains help improve water quality, prevent future flooding, and save taxpayers money.”
The debris that collects in drains – such as trash, leaves, soil, grass clippings, and fertilizer – washes into the drain and becomes pollution in our lakes and streams. These pollutants can kill fish, close beaches, and increase weed and algae growth.
“We are excited to work toward improving our local waterways by joining this program on World Water Day,” said Town of Brookfield Chairman Keith Henderson. “This is a great opportunity for our residents to participate and engage with the Town in making a positive impact on our freshwater resources.”
Adopters are asked to clean the surface of their storm drain twice a month and report the quantity and composition of any debris they remove. All participants are provided a brief online training to learn how to remain safe while clearing their drain and they will also receive a safety vest and storm drain marker medallion.
