— A three-man effort to run for spots on the Journal Communications board of directors has been shut down.

The three men — John Torinus, who is chairman of Serigraph Inc. and a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel columnist; former Journal Communications general counsel Paul Kritzer; and former Milwaukee Journal film critic Doug Armstrong — sent a note to supporters this week saying they could not afford to spend the $500,000 to $2 million it would take to run a viable independent proxy campaign. Previously they said they were running for the board to protect the dividend, cease acquisitions of traditional media and pay down debt.
