MADISON, WI (April 11, 2012) – The Wisconsin Association for Perinatal Care (WAPC) is pleased to announce that the 2012 recipient of the Callon-Leonard Award is Dennis Worthington, MD. Dr. Worthington is the chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare Hospitals in southeast Wisconsin. He is also a clinical professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Wisconsin and past president of the Wisconsin Association for Perinatal Care.

Dr. Worthington’s distinguished career spans several countries and states. Dr. Worthington graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in Scotland and did an internship in Denver, Colorado. He then did a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, followed by fellowships in perinatal medicine at Kingston and fetal physiology/endocrinology at the University of Oxford in England.

According to Margaret Carr, MD, one of Dr. Worthington’s practice partners, Dennis worked to advance the specialty of maternal fetal medicine since arriving in Milwaukee over 30 years ago. He distinguished himself as an expert clinician and scientist, bringing both the art and science of his specialty to his patients. Mary Mazul, a certified nurse midwife who works with Dr. Worthington credits him with providing the best care for all of his patients and sharing his knowledge with students and new practitioners to assure a “new generation of intelligent, thoughtful and accomplished practitioners to care for women in our community.”

Dr. Carr reiterated these sentiments. Dr. Worthington’s passion and dedication is reflected in his clinical practice and professional mentoring. After specializing in maternal fetal medicine, Dr. Carr returned to Wisconsin because of Dr. Worthington’s influence.

Dr. Worthington will receive the award, the highest honor that WAPC bestows, on April 16, 2012, during the Awards Banquet at the WAPC annual conference at the Hyatt on Main in Green Bay. Tickets to the event can be ordered by calling 608-417-6060 or sending an email to wapc@perinatalweb.org. The award honors two of WAPC’s visionary founders, Helen F. Callon, RN, CNM, and Thomas A. Leonard, MD.
