MILWAUKEE, WI (May 16, 2011) – America SCORES Milwaukee, an affiliate of America SCORES, a national organization that works to enrich the lives of urban youth through regular participation in soccer, creative writing and service learning, was selected by Starbucks as a 2012 Starbucks Shared Planet Youth Action Grant recipient. One of several national applicants, America SCORES Milwaukee was the only Wisconsin non-profit organization awarded the grant.
“America SCORES Milwaukee encourages children to become agents of positive change in their communities which aligns perfectly with Starbucks’ company-wide commitment to help create thriving neighborhoods where it does business,” said Julie LaFore, Starbucks Grant Ambassador and District Manager. “Since 2008, Starbucks has awarded more then $5 million in Youth Action Grants to a multitude of non-profit organizations that have engaged more than 50,000 young people in community activities.”
“Receiving the grant is a huge and welcomed boost to the visibility and sustainability of our program,” said Kate Carpenter, Executive Director of America SCORES Milwaukee. “Large or small, our service projects empower our children to positively impact their neighborhoods.”
This spring, America SCORES Milwaukee participants’ service projects have been created with the focus on safety. On Friday, June 3rd, more than 125 youth will display their service projects at the annual America SCORES Jamboree! held at Uihlein Soccer Park from 4-6pm. Numerous Starbucks partners will also be in attendance to support SCORES participants as they share information they have
learned about safety and cheer them on as they play in their final soccer games of the season.
