In situ stabilization technology to manage lead-contaminated soil and sediment
MADISON, Wis., May 21 /PRNewswire/ — RMT, Inc. has been selected to perform the Remedial Action for Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia, as a subcontractor to HydroGeoLogic, Inc. (HGL), who holds the prime contract with the Air Force.
The project consists of remediating 16,550 cubic yards of lead-contaminated soil and sediment associated with a former skeet shooting range. The remediation will involve in situ stabilization of both upland soils and sediments from a cove of the Back River.
HGL conducted the Remedial Design for the site and selected in situ stabilization with a phosphate-based chemistry as the remedy of choice. This solution presented the challenge of providing adequate stabilization of the lead without also increasing phosphorous levels in nearby Chesapeake Bay. RMT’s Applied Chemistry lab came up with a unique approach for reducing the leachability of phosphorous, which becomes elevated as part of the stabilization process. “We were able to create that balance between stabilization and contributing to the phosphorous leaching,” explains Dan Oman, RMT’s Director of Turnkey Sales.
The cove remediation will require installation of a temporary water-filled dam in order to dewater the area so that sediment can be stabilized. Once rendered non-hazardous, all treated soil and sediment from upland and the cove areas will be moved to an onsite disposal area and capped in place. RMT will also restore the cove and create additional wetlands surrounding the disposal area. Work is anticipated to be completed in six months.
Langley is the oldest continually active Air Force base in the United States and is the home of the 1st Fighter Wing, Air Combat Command, as well as the 192nd Fighter Wing Air National Guard component. “Langley is a showplace for the Air Force,” Oman explains. “We look forward to working with HGL and the Air Force to support the base’s environmental efforts.”
