Gov. Doyle: Announces Training and Investment Partnership with Miller Brewing Company

MILWAUKEE – Governor Jim Doyle today announced a state training and investment partnership with Miller Brewing Company in Milwaukee, awarding the company $1.25 million in tax credits and $255,000 for job training. Governor Doyle was joined by Miller Brewing Company president and CEO Norman Adami and Department of Commerce Secretary Mary Burke for the announcement at the company’s brewery in Milwaukee.

“Investment in Miller’s facilities and employee training will ensure that Miller will continue to be competitive in the global marketplace and that workers in Milwaukee will continue to have access to good paying jobs,” Governor Doyle said.

Miller will receive a $1.25 million Enterprise Development Zone tax credit allocation for upgrading the Milwaukee brewery site, storage facilities and utilities to increase its efficiency.  Miller will invest an additional $46 to $79 million over the next five years to upgrade its Milwaukee manufacturing facility, the oldest brewery within the Miller Brewing Company system.

The Governor also presented Miller with a $255,000 grant to train employees in order to improve operating efficiency.  The training project is critical to the company’s ability to retain 650 manufacturing positions at Miller Brewing Company in Milwaukee.  The company will be working with various unions represented in its Milwaukee brewery to maximize the effectiveness of the enhanced skills and training. The total investment in employee training for this initiative is $5.7 million.

“Significant investments in our employees and upgrades to our historic Milwaukee brewery will result in a more efficient facility and a highly skilled workforce ready to take on the challenges and opportunities that the future brings,” said Adami.  “The Governor’s support of this initiative will help ensure the long-term success of Miller Brewing Company and all of its employees, keeping the rich tradition of brewing alive in Milwaukee.”

As one of America’s oldest brewers, Miller Brewing Company continues the commitment of founder Frederick J. Miller to brew ‘confoundedly good beers’ with ‘uncompromising quality.’  Through more than 150 years of innovation and brewing excellence, Miller has built a broad portfolio of award-winning beers that capture approximately 18% of the U.S. beer market.
