MADISON – Gov. Jim Doyle today announced that Legacy Farms, LLC, Shell Lake, Washburn County, will receive $50,000 in loans from the Department of Commerce Rural Economic Development (RED) Milk Volume Production (MVP) Program. The loan was made at the RED Board meeting held January 17 in Madison.

“Through my Grow Wisconsin plan, we are working hard to invest in our agricultural economy – moving it to the high end by modernizing and expanding Wisconsin’s dairy industry,” Governor Doyle said. “I am pleased that the state could help Legacy Farms, LLC grow its business and invest in Wisconsin’s farm economy.”

Legacy Farms, LLC currently milks 500 cows and farms over 1,500 acres of cropland. It will use the funds to purchase 100 cows and expand its dairy operation. The project will create three jobs. MVP funds will leverage an additional $450,000 in financing to complete the project.

All Wisconsin dairy producers, both existing and start-up, are eligible to apply for the MVP Program. Awards are made on a competitive basis. The RED Program, administered by Commerce, helps small rural businesses start-up and expand their operations.
