Following Chief Shon F. Barnes’ resignation from the Madison Police Department, the Board designated Assistant Chief John Patterson as the Department officer who is temporarily authorized to act as Chief of Police until such time as the Board makes a permanent appointment to the Chief of Police position. Acting Chief Patterson has significant experience with the Madison Police Department, having joined the Department in 1998.
The Board, which has jurisdiction to appoint a Chief of Police under state law, will now be undertaking the process to appoint Chief Barnes’ successor. The Board consists of five (5) residents of the City of Madison who volunteer their time. The Board will strive to complete the hiring process by September of 2025.
The Board is actively seeking input regarding the Chief of Police position from members of the public, internal and external stakeholders, and community groups. The Board receives input at its regular business meetings. The Board’s regular business meetings take place on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 P.M. by Zoom.
