Madison, WI – Today, the progressive majority in the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled in favor of Governor Evers’ 400-year property tax hike veto, giving the governor the power to effectively transform legislation for centuries. Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin (AFP-WI) responded to this ruling.
AFP-WI State Director Megan Novak released the following statement:
“Today’s ruling by the progressive Wisconsin Supreme Court is a troubling expansion of the veto pen and far beyond what the Constitution intends. By upholding Governor Evers’ partial veto, the Court has given one person the power to rewrite legislation and institute a 400 year property tax hike without accountability.
“The power of policy must remain in the legislature. By allowing one official to decide the impact of legislation for centuries to come, the Supreme Court of Wisconsin has undermined the checks and balances of our legislative process.
“Wisconsinites deserve transparency and accountability in government. Unfortunately, today’s Supreme Court decision has weakened the checks and balances our state relies on. AFP-WI disagrees with the decision and will continue to support common-sense policies that make living in Wisconsin affordable.”
