Nationally known course designer, Cale Leiviska, will toss the first disc on Saturday, August 17
Green Bay, Wis.— Natural beauty. Woods and rolling elevation. A ravine and even a few water hazards. Designed by nationally known disc golf designer and pro, Cale Leiviska, the new Shorewood Disc Golf Course on the UW-Green Bay campus checks all the boxes for a destination-worthy disc golf course.
The campus, surrounding communities and avid disc golfers throughout the region are invited to view the visionary work of this 18-hole course on Saturday, August 17, 2024, from 1 to 3 p.m. Just in time for the start of the 2024 fall semester, the course will be available for both student and community use, allowing even more people to enjoy the beauty of the UW-Green Bay campus.
“This course is amazing, offering holes that will challenge the seasoned disc golfer, and allow beginners to experience the fun of disc golf,” said Jeff Krueger, director of University Recreation (URec) and Kress Events Center Operations. “It’s an incredible opportunity for both UW-Green Bay students and the community to explore the outdoors, enjoy time together, and create a community around this beautiful, natural space. Additionally, the ongoing development of the Shorewood property supports our students’ recreation desires while also attracting new community user groups to explore. We are excited with the opening of the disc golf course and eager about the potential to further develop and showcase this beautiful area on campus.”
The course was designed by nationally known disc golf designer and pro Cale Leiviska. With a degree in Conservation Biology and background in Forest Management, Leiviska brings his love for the sport and expertise in preserving a course’s surrounding natural beauty to the new Shorewood Disc Golf Course, with a goal to make it one of the premier courses in the state. Leiviska will be at the event to ‘throw the first disc’ and speak to his experience and vision in creating the new course.
Over the past two years, UW-Green Bay has transformed the Shorewood property into Shorewood Park, a community-use space that has drawn thousands of visitors to campus and has created a place for hosting programming and activities for the campus and the region. In addition to a disc golf course, Shorewood Park includes Phoenix Alumni Cross Country Course, ski trails, URec (University Recreation Outdoors), an ROTC land navigation course and the Cofrin Biodiversity Center which includes ecological restoration efforts to reintroduce native plant species that support many unique insects, birds and other wildlife, while simultaneously providing additional learning opportunities for students.
Disc Golf is a rapidly growing sport in Wisconsin and the nation. It provides a self-paced, relaxing and rewarding activity that is an excellent opportunity for individuals and groups to engage in social activity, team building, exercise, enjoying nature, and physical and mental wellness.
The addition of the disc golf course continues the vision of the Shorewood property, making it a destination for students and the community. Support for the new disc golf course comes from the UW-Green Bay Student Government Association and the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay Foundation.
