On Monday, July 15, 2024, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors held a Special Board Meeting for consideration and possible action on the appointment of an Interim Superintendent of Schools and appointment of a Board Clerk.
Board Clerk
The Board appointed Dr. Tina Owen-Moore, Ed.L.D. to the position of Board Clerk for the Office of Board Governance. The Board Clerk manages the Office, serving as an administrator, parliamentarian, and records custodian for the Milwaukee Board of School Directors.
“We are excited to welcome Dr. Owen-Moore to MPS to lead the Office of Board Governance. I feel confident that her extensive knowledge as an administrator will help guide the Board’s activities moving forward,” said Milwaukee Board of School Directors President Marva Herndon.
Dr. Owen-Moore served as superintendent of the School District of Cudahy from July 2020 to July 2024. Prior to this position, Dr. Owen-Moore served as the Chief People Officer at the Chicago International Charter School, a network of 14 charter schools across the city of Chicago. In 2005, Dr. Owen-Moore established and led the Alliance School of Milwaukee, an MPS charter school that was founded on a mission to reduce bullying.
Dr. Owen-Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education from Marquette University, a master’s degree in administrative leadership from Alverno College, a doctorate in education leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a superintendent endorsement from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Jill Kawala, who has been serving as Interim Board Clerk, will resume the role of Assistant Board Clerk.
Interim Superintendent
In another item of business during the Meeting, the Board interviewed its three final candidates for the position of Interim Superintendent. If a candidate is selected for, and accepts the position, their appointment will be formalized at a future board meeting. The Milwaukee Board of School Directors anticipates having an Interim Superintendent in place before the beginning of the school year.
The Board intends to engage a firm to lead a robust national search for a permanent superintendent. The district will seek input from the community and other MPS stakeholders.
