RENEW Wisconsin: Community, city and state leaders join RENEW Wisconsin to announce the launch of 2024 MadiSUN Solar Programs

Madison, WI  – On Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Centro Hispano of Dane County, Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and RENEW Wisconsin announced the launch of MadiSUN’s 2024 Solar Programs, the City’s initiative to expand solar energy for local homes, businesses, affordable housing providers, and nonprofits. Participants included Lauren Cohen, Program Manager with RENEW Wisconsin, Karen Menéndez Coller, Executive Director of Centro Hispano of Dane County, and Flannery Geoghegan, Senior Director of Policy for the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.

MadiSUN offers three key programs: Solar Group Buy for Homes, Solar for Business, and the Backyard Solar Program. To date, these programs have added nearly 5 MW of solar energy to Madison’s electric mix, with a total investment of over $8,000,000. Centro Hispano of Dane County, the hosts of the press conference, received a $10,000 Backyard Solar Grant in 2023 for their 67.5-kW solar array.

The press conference underscored the significant impact of federal investments in climate action, particularly through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Solar for All program. Since its passage in 2022, the IRA has helped countless residents, businesses, and nonprofits make renewable energy upgrades. This year marks the first opportunity for nonprofits to utilize the Elective Pay provision, allowing them to access the Solar Investment Tax Credit directly to cover 30% of their solar system costs. Additionally, last month, Governor Evers announced that the Wisconsin Economic Development Association will receive a competitive $62.4 million grant from the EPA’s Solar for All program, a significant milestone for solar development in the state. This funding will directly benefit low- and moderate-income households, promoting energy equity and environmental justice by making solar energy more accessible and making a tangible difference for the City of Madison and the State of Wisconsin.

“We seek to create an energy system that is renewable and works for all,” said WEDC Secretary and CEO Missy Hughes. The grant represents a huge step forward in that effort.”

These federal investments will complement and accelerate not only national but local efforts as well. With the incentives available through the Inflation Reduction Act coupled with the funding available through Solar for All, there is no better time to pursue solar energy.

“MadiSUN provides invaluable assistance to residents, businesses, and nonprofits across Madison,” said Lauren Cohen, Program Manager of RENEW Wisconsin. “By lowering the upfront costs and simplifying the process of going solar, we help our community members save on energy bills, reduce their carbon footprint, and contribute to a more sustainable future. The program’s success is a testament to the power of local action supported by strong federal incentives.”

With the support of the MadiSUN program and the incentives provided by the Inflation Reduction Act and the Solar for All program, embarking on a solar journey has never been more possible. The City of Madison is confident that 2024 will mark the most successful year yet for MadiSUN.

“I am proud to highlight the incredible value the MadiSUN program brings to our community,” said Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway. “MadiSUN has been instrumental in making solar energy accessible and affordable for our residents, businesses, and non-profit partners. This program not only supports our commitment to renewable energy but also supports green jobs and reduces energy costs for families and businesses.”

The launch of MadiSUN’s 2024 Solar Programs marks a significant step forward in Madison’s commitment to sustainable energy and climate action. Bolstered by federal investments, Madison is poised to expand its renewable energy infrastructure and promote energy equity across the community. As we move forward, the MadiSUN program remains dedicated to fostering a sustainable and resilient future for all residents of Madison.
