MHA Lakeshore: Amps up for Mental Health Awareness Month, mental health deemed Sheboygan County’s top health concern

Plymouth, Wis. (May 1, 2024)  Mental Health America Lakeshore (MHA Lakeshore) makes the most of May! MHA Lakeshore helps Sheboygan County find “Where To Start” for mental wellbeing journeys as the organization continues to find new ways to advocate and educate for mental health. Following the recent release of the Healthy Sheboygan County Community Health Assessment reporting that mental health is Sheboygan County’s top public health concern, MHA Lakeshore takes additional action throughout the month of May and beyond.

“Now, more than ever, we have to activate and advocate for mental health in our community,” said Julie Preder, executive director of MHA Lakeshore. “We serve as mental health connectors, raising awareness and providing essential support to our community, schools, and businesses through community programs, support groups, and information services. Our mission is to champion mental health and wellness for all, not just in May but every day!”

In support of the national arm of Mental Health America, the local chapter themes its initiatives and messaging on the nationwide Mental Health Awareness Month focus of “Where to Start”. This year’s Mental Health Month theme, “Where to Start: Mental Health in a Changing World,” focuses on how external factors, such as society, politics or the economy, can make seeking help for a mental health condition even more overwhelming. According to MHA National, while society is getting more comfortable discussing mental health, it can still be hard to know “where to start” when it comes to taking care of your own wellbeing.

“We have found that mental behavioral health is a very complicated system, MHA Lakeshore is seen as experts in finding, navigating and linking the right resources and programs for our community members through educating and advocating for mental health,” said Preder. “It is our hope that our community finds a sense of comfort in knowing ‘where to start’.”

The Lakeshore community is encouraged to contact a local Mental Health Resource Specialist at 920-458-3951 ext. 1001 on questions and accessing services. This is a FREE and confidential program. This is where to start.

During the month of May, MHA Lakeshore offers a wide variety of mental wellbeing-forward programs and events. In addition to the recently launched Mental Health and the Great Outdoors Series (press release) and a new signature fundraiser “Whole In One” Mental Health Awareness Golf Outing at Whistling Straits. This new initiative is led by MHA Lakeshore board president-elect Barbra Klug, Sr. Counsel – Commercial and Real Estate at Kohler Co. The all-day event will include a putting contest, round of golf, dinner, and keynote speakers Julie Preder, MHA Lakeshore executive director, and John Kuhn, former Green Bay Packer and two-time Super Bowl Champion. Sponsorships and silent auction donations are still being accepted for the sold-out golf outing by contacting info@mhalakeshore.org
