In the wake of recent news regarding the investigation at Waupun Correctional Institution (WCI) and the 11 employees suspended for involvement in a possible smuggling ring, we would like to take the opportunity to address this very alarming issue.
Through our experiences at SCI (Stanley Correctional Institution) our organization has come to learn some hard truths on this issue .1. Correctional officers smuggling contraband into facilities is a problem that goes back years if not decades. 2. While this information may be a surprise to most Wisconsinites, it was not a surprise to the Department of Corrections, our organization, or other support people with incarcerated loved ones in Wisconsin.
While we applaud the Governor and the Secretary’s office for calling in federal authorities to investigate at WCI, we ask the Governor’s office to request this investigation be extended to every state prison in Wisconsin. We also ask for the Department of Corrections and the Governor’s office to be transparent with the people of Wisconsin as to the scope of this very alarming problem and what is being done to address it. The lives our our incarcerated loved ones depend on it. Has any of the contraband brought into our prisons been involved in the loss of life?
