BizStarts: To host free summer camp for disadvantaged youth

Milwaukee, WI – July 3, 2024 – BizStarts, in partnership with the Center for Teaching Entrepreneurship, is excited to announce “First Launch,” a free summer camp for children ages 11-14 from disadvantaged areas in Milwaukee. The camp, based on the Entrepreneurial Mindset curriculum from the Kauffman Foundation, will be held from July 8th to July 11th at three different locations: Chuchos Red Tacos/Farmhouse Paint and Sip, the Lubar Entrepreneurship Center at UWM, and the newly opened Diverse Dining Market. Additionally, campers will enjoy a field trip to the Edessa School of Fashion.

“The entrepreneurial mindset is one of the most critical assets to becoming a successful business person. The ability to start these entrepreneurs at a young and influential age will give our campers a tremendous advantage in life,” said Patrick Snyder, President of BizStarts.

Camp Facilitator, Stephanie Banks from Banks C-Suite Consulting, is certified by the Kauffman Foundation to teach the Entrepreneurial Mindset course and developed the camp for Milwaukee’s Mini Entrepreneurs. “The concepts, lessons, and resources included in The Ice House Entrepreneurship Program (Middle School Edition) curriculum provide the tools we need to help Milwaukee students embrace a way of thinking that has the ability to forever change how they decide to positively navigate their life situations through this memorable camp experience,” said Banks.

The “First Launch” camp aims to teach campers essential entrepreneurial skills through fun and engaging activities. These skills include:

  1. Developing confidence and social skills
  2. Making better choices and managing emotions
  3. Finding solutions to everyday problems and discovering opportunities
  4. Taking action and getting started before having everything figured out
  5. Being willing to continue learning and embrace different methods
  6. Starting with little resources and leveraging it as an advantage
  7. Consistently doing what they said they would do and maintaining a good reputation
  8. Asking for help and finding a supportive community
  9. Recovering from difficult situations

These lessons will be taught through stories and insights from Milwaukee entrepreneurs, including many graduates of the BizStarts Institute 6-week business bootcamp.

BizStarts and the Center for Teaching Entrepreneurship are committed to providing the next generation of entrepreneurs with the tools and mindset needed to succeed in life and business. Best of all, the camp is being offered at no cost to the participants, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to benefit from this incredible experience.
