Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau: Bayfield and Washburn Galleries collaborate during Highway 13 road construction

Bayfield, Wis. (March 19, 2024) – When Bell Street Collective owner Kayla Picciano, learned about major road construction coming to Washburn in 2024 her first response was “How can I help?”

With locations in Bayfield and on Madeline Island, Picciano understands the challenges of running a small business in the area. “If I found out the ferry to Madeline Island couldn’t run for a season, I’d be done. There’s no way I’d make it,” said Picciano.

This summer, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will begin a two-phase project to replace deteriorated HWY 13 that runs through Washburn. During the first phase, HWY 13 will be closed in the downtown area between 2nd Avenue and Thompson Creek from March through October 2024. The detour route will take visitors two blocks away along Holman Drive.

To overcome the drop in traffic through Washburn, Picciano, working in partnership with building owner Matt Carrier, offered Ghost Ship a spot at her new location in the 107 Building on Manypenny Ave.

“We’ve been preparing for this for two years,” said Kelsey Lundberg, co-owner of Ghost Ship Gallery on HWY 13 in Washburn. “When we talk about road construction, most people’s response is ‘Oh no! What are you going to do?!’ Kayla and Matt were the first people to say ‘How can we help?’”

As Bell Street’s “gallery in residence,” Ghost Ship will curate a unique space called The Green Room to sell their artists’ work and encourage Bayfield visitors to check out the main gallery in Washburn.

“We’re excited to try a unique partnership between two businesses that would traditionally be seen as competitors,” said Picciano. “We’ve found people who love art not only visit multiple galleries but also buy from multiple galleries. The more we can support each other and differentiate what we offer, the better experience we create for art lovers in the area—and the more fun we all have together.”

“We’re always excited to try things and see what happens,” said Brianna Bailey, co-owner of Ghost Ship Gallery. “This is a big help to Ghost Ship to keep us afloat and continue our

momentum during a hard season. After we get through road construction, we’ll be looking for a new way to return the favor or pay it forward.”

Bell Street Collective and Ghost Ship Gallery are targeting a soft launch of their new space on April 5 with plans for a more official event at the beginning of summer. Follow their social media channels and visit their websites for the latest information and updates.
