Waukesha Water Utility, Great Water Alliance: Learn about the coming water supply transition this week

(WAUKESHA) The Waukesha Water Utility is inviting customers to learn more about the  upcoming switch to Lake Michigan water supply at two open houses this week.

“We are holding open houses so that our water users can see presentations and ask questions about what to expect with the late-summer switch to the new water supply,” said Dan  Duchniak, the general manager of the water utility. “The change will bring us a safe and reliable  water supply for generations to come, but customers will want to know about some potential  temporary impacts in their homes. The open houses are just one of the ways they can learn  more.”

The two open houses will be held Thursday, May 4 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday,  May 6 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The events will be held in the Waukesha City Hall  Council Chambers, 201 Delafield St. The May 4 presentation will also be streamed live on the  city’s website. Residents can find it at the Event Calendar at www.waukesha-wi.gov.

Both events will feature a presentation by Duchniak and time for questions. Various experts will  also be available at information booths after the presentation, where customers can ask  additional questions. The events are geared toward residential customers. Businesses with  questions are encouraged to contact the water utility directly.

Duchniak said, “Most of our customers know that our current supply is severely depleted and  has naturally occurring contaminants like radium. Those are the reasons Waukesha is switching  to a safe and sustainable Lake Michigan water supply from the Milwaukee Water Works in late  summer. The project is known as the Great Water Alliance.”

He added, “We have been preparing for years to be sure the switch is safe and as problem-free as possible, and many other area communities have made the same transition without  problems. However, people may experience temporary issues like discolored water.”

Duchniak said customers can also learn more and sign up for quarterly newsletters at the Great  Water Alliance website, www.greatwateralliance.com. Information – including more about the  timing of the switch – will also be distributed before the transition in bill stuffers, on social
