Green Bay, WI — The University of Wisconsin Green Bay continues to celebrate Hispanic/Latinx Heritage month with the community. On Saturday, September 30, The Weidner Philharmonic will perform pieces featuring four Hispanic composers during their “Dance Dance Evolution” program. Witness the interconnectedness of music and dance as this symphonic program explores and reimagines dance music genres from around the world. Tickets are still available and can be found here. The event is conducted by Michael Alexander, UW-Green Bay Chancellor.
Approximately 9% of UW-Green Bay’s student population identifies as Hispanic/Latinx, which has steadily increased for the past 10 years. UW-Green Bay campus leaders, including the student organization Organización Latino Americana (OLA) have collaborated with faculty, staff, students and the community to offer a variety of programs which celebrate and recognize the history, culture, contributions and presence of Hispanic/Latinx people in the United States and the community.
Estamos Aqui kicked off the month-long celebration, hosting more than 8,000 people on the UW-Green Bay, Green Bay campus. Twelve bands, 30 visual artists, a car show, kids’ activities, delicious food and more created the celebratory atmosphere. “This event exceeded our expectations,” said Paulina Chavira Duran, community engagement and outreach coordinator with The Weidner and part of the Estamos Aqui planning committee. “Celebrating the rich Hispanic/Latinx culture in this way had an incredible impact on our local community, and we can’t wait to do it again next year.”
While the Weidner Philharmonic performance highlights this weekend, the full schedule of events through mid-October can be found here.
