GOP Budget Fails Wisconsin
MADISON–
Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly debated and passed the 2023-2025 biennial budget as redone by the majority party. Rep. Christine Sinicki (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement in response:
“The budget that the majority party passed fails to fund the true needs of the people of our state. Throughout the past few months, I have heard from constituents about the budget solutions they actually need to thrive, including funding for childcare, education, workforce development, and more. Today’s budget fails to make key investments in these urgent areas. “For months, the majority party has harped on the workforce shortages our state faces. Nonetheless, they refused to offer budget solutions that would make it possible for people to work, such as increased funding for childcare, paid Family Leave, and main street businesses. “In addition, it is vital that our k-12 and higher education systems, at the heart of workforce development, have the resources they need to thrive. Democrats put forward an amendment today that would have made critical investments in general and categorical aids for public education, special education reimbursement, student mental health, the UW System and technical college funding. Sadly, Republicans rejected this amendment, offering cuts instead and failing to provide the support our Wisconsin education systems deserve. “Republicans also voted against accepting generous federal funding for BadgerCare expansion; against repealing the draconian no-abortion law; against cannabis legalization and ensuing revenues; against gun safety measures; and against PFAs management initiatives. “This GOP budget, in contrast to the positive budget originally proposed by Gov. Evers, is made up of No to this, No to that, No to the needs of real flesh and blood Wisconsinites.”
