Port of Green Bay: July tonnage totals remain strong

(Green Bay, Wis.) – With 256,395 tons of cargo moved through the Port of Green Bay during July, this season’s shipping numbers remain strong. Year-to-date totals of 924,778 tons show an increase of 13% over the same period last year when the tonnage totaled 823,620.

“We’re very happy to have had five strong months to start this year’s shipping season,” said Dean Haen, Port of Green Bay Director. “Because port activity is indicative of the economic health of northeast Wisconsin’s economy, it’s always good to see strong totals over a sustained period of time. While we don’t know what the remainder of the season will bring, we’re optimistic.”

The leading cargo import during July was limestone at 133,534 tons. Other imports in July included cement (44,710 tons), petroleum products (39,360 tons), coal (14,345 tons), wood pulp/forest products (7,990 tons), slag (6,360 tons) and liquid asphalt (5,104 tons). There were also 4,992 tons of petroleum products exported during the month. During July, 23 ships entered the Port, which is two more ships than the same month last year.

“Waterborne transport is a key component in multimodal transportation plans that serve industries in NE Wisconsin, and these industries contribute substantially to our quality of life,” Haen added. “Shipping is one of the most environmentally friendly, efficient and reliable ways to transport goods, and we’re fortunate to have partners who realize these benefits.” Those interested in recent and historical tonnage information for the Port of Green Bay can visit https://www.portofgreenbay.com/cargo-quantities-shipped.
