(Green Bay, Wis.) – As of November, year-to-date tonnage totals for the Port of Green Bay are tracking slightly behind the same period last season. Year-to-date, 1,589,460 tons have been handled in the Port, representing a decrease of 2% compared to the same period last year when the tonnage totaled 1,616,930.

This November, 77,941 tons of cargo moved through the Port compared to 149,309 tons for the same month last year. “It took a while for ships to begin moving again once the weeklong shutdown of the St. Lawrence Seaway ended in late October,” stated Dean Haen, Port of Green Bay Director. “While our November totals were notably lower than historic November totals, heading into the last few weeks of the season, we remain optimistic that we’ll end the season with tonnage totals comparable to last year or better.”

The top cargos moved through the Port during November were cement at 36,024 tons, petroleum products at 24,384 tons and salt at 16,558 tons. An additional 975 tons of slag were imported. No limestone was imported this November.

A total of 9 ships entered the Port this November, compared to 14 ships last November. A total of 149 ships have visited the Port this year, compared to 143 during the same period last year.

“Given the weeklong pause in shipping this fall, we remain pleased with the overall tonnage so far this season,” Haen added. “Shipping on the Great Lakes is still one of the most reliable, cost-effective and sustainable ways to move commodities and finished goods in and out of the heartland.” Those interested in recent and historical tonnage information for the Port of Green Bay can visit https://www.portofgreenbay.com/cargo-quantities-shipped.
