MILWAUKEE, Wis. – More than 80 Milwaukee-area high school graduates are headed to college with help from the Greater Milwaukee Urban League and its generous sponsors.
Sixty students are being awarded $1,000 scholarships, and 43 students will receive free laptop computers.
The media is invited to cover the ceremony to present the scholarships and laptops on Tuesday, June 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Peck Welcome Center at the Milwaukee County Zoo.
To be eligible for the scholarships and laptops, students had to be accepted into a two-year or four-year college or university. Students applied and provided essays in one of three categories: Academic Excellence, Community Service/Leadership or Character/Academic Turnaround, and completed essays related to personal growth or a community issue.
“Greater Milwaukee Urban League is proud to join with our sponsors to support our students as they move on to the next stage of their educational careers,” said Dr. Eve M. Hall, President and CEO of GMUL. “We wish them the best and expect great things from them in the future.”
Scholarship and laptop students are attending a variety of local colleges and universities, including Alverno College, Carroll University, Milwaukee Area Technical College, Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Several students also are attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities, including Alcorn State University, Florida A&M University, Jackson State University, North Carolina State University and Spelman College.
Companies sponsoring the scholarships and laptops are Enterprise Holdings, Johnson Controls Inc., Kohler Co., and the NBA Foundation. Target Corp. is providing accessories for the laptop awards.
