Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, a steadfast climate advocate, has been named co-chair of the City-County Advisory Board on Climate and Economic Equity by Common Council President José G. Pérez.

On June 20, the Common Council passed an ordinance adopting the Climate and Equity Plan and amending the Citywide Policy Plan as part of Milwaukee’s Overall Comprehensive Plan.  Included in the file was the creation of the City-County Advisory Board on Climate and Economic Equity tasked with reviewing the implementation of the Climate and Equity Plan.

“The action taken by the Council last month was historic. When it comes to climate change we could not afford to wait any longer. We humans helped cause climate change, and now we must come together to slow the warming of the earth and ensure our future generations have the cleanest air, land, and water possible,” said Alderwoman Dimitrijevic.

The Climate and Equity Plan goals include reducing community greenhouse gas emissions 45% by 2030, achieving net zero emissions by 2050, and improving racial and economic equity by creating green jobs that pay at least $40,000 and are focused on recruiting local people of color.

“The Climate and Equity plan will put Milwaukee in position to pursue federal funds to support new clean energy technologies, housing improvements, and other modern infrastructure. These projects will create green jobs, and the city’s green jobs accelerator will inform the public about education, training, and new job opportunities, and connect them with potential employers,” said the Alderwoman.

“What makes me excited about the future is that Milwaukee has a plan. We are done talking about this issue and are ready to act, ready to move forward in creating a more vibrant, healthy city that benefits everyone,” Alderwoman Dimitrijevic continued. “The advisory board will help oversee the implementation of these progressive and ambitious goals, and help pivot as needed to make sure we meet them. I look forward to working with and setting the tone for my colleagues on the advisory board because we don’t have an alternative living situation if the planet keeps warming at its current rate. Our children are watching us and deserve the best future possible.”
