Medical Examiner, American Tissue Services Foundation to Help Raise Awareness
(Brown County, Wis.) – Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach is highlighting the benefits of people becoming tissue, eye, and organ donors as the Brown County Medical Examiner’s office plays a vital role in securing these lifesaving transplants.
“Each life is precious and becoming an organ and tissue donor is not only a display of kindness but saves lives and gives people waiting for a transplant a renewed chance at life,” says Streckenbach.
In Brown County, nearly 60 percent of drivers and ID card holders are registered organ, tissue, and eye donors. That’s above the statewide number of 57.5% are registered, as of July 2022. However, the need continues to grow as there are approximately 1,700 Wisconsinites waiting for life-saving organ transplants.
“The Brown County Medical Examiner’s Office supports organ and tissue donation agencies in their mission to help the living through the generosity of donors and their families,” says Dr. Elizabeth Douglas, Chief Medical Examiner for Brown, Door, and Oconto Counties. “It is our hope that grieving families and friends can find comfort in knowing their loved one’s last act on earth was an act of service to somebody in need.”
“Brown County has great reason to be so proud as citizens chose to support each other through tissue, eye, and organ donation,” says Lori Shinstine, Vice President of Operations at the American Tissue Services Foundation. “This act of kindness equals lives saved or greatly enhanced.”
The impact from people being tissue, organ, and eye donors is large. According to Donate Life Wisconsin, 1 person can save and heal up to 75 lives. Residents can enroll to be a donor through the following options:
- Register at a Wisconsin DMV service center or at www.donatelifewisconsin.org
- Register to be a donor while renewing your hunting/fishing/trapping license at Wisconsin DNR’S Go Wild! site at https://gowild.wi.gov
- Tell your family about your decision to be a donor.
