Madison, Wis. —The University of Pennsylvania’s Scheie Eye Institute on April 12th presented its outstanding alumni award to Dr. Daniel Albert of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
Albert, chairman emeritus of ophthalmology and visual sciences, was honored for his study of ocular tumors including his participation in the isolation of the gene that causes retinoblastoma. Albert is also a noted scholar of the history of ophthalmology and medical ethics. He gave the David M. Kozart Memorial Lecture during the University of Pennsylvania’s celebration of the 140th anniversary of its ophthalmology department on April 11 and 12.
Albert received his medical degree and did his residency at the University of Pennsylvania under the legendary Dr. Harold Scheie. He did fundamental work in determining the ultrastucture of retinoblastoma and melanoma and established animal models of these tumors. He was a faculty member at Yale and Harvard universities, and at Harvard, occupied the Cogan chair in ophthalmology.
In 1992, Albert came to Wisconsin to head the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. He is also the founding director of the UW’s McPherson Eye Research Institute and the Frederick Allison Davis professor.
