Madison, Wis. (February 23, 2011) – Edgewood College student-athletes proved once again that excellence in athletics and academics go hand-in-hand. Eagle athletes from all 16 varsity sports turned in a combined grade point average of 3.37 for the 2010 fall semester. Every Eagle program recorded a team grade point average higher than 3.00.
The women’s track team led by head coach Bethany Brewster led the department with a 3.63 grade point average, including three student-athletes with perfect 4.0 grade point averages. The newly restored men’s tennis program, coached by Ben Oestreich, had the highest GPA among men’s teams with a 3.62 cumulative average. Women’s golf (3.60 GPA), women’s basketball (3.51 GPA) and men’s cross country (3.51 GPA) all recorded grade point averages higher than 3.50.
“Eagle student-athletes have embraced the identity of scholar-athletes,” Athletic Director Al Brisack said. “Our staff is very proud of the student-athletes’ commitment to reaching their potential in the classroom, as well as on the court and field. Of course, this kind of academic success is a result of the learning community we enjoy here, and the relationships the student-athletes develop with our coaching staff, academic support staff and outstanding faculty.”
