— As sweeping new legislation regarding disposal of electronic waste moves through the Legislature, some technology groups and recycling businesses are lauding the measure even as electronics manufacturers say it places an impossible task on them to control what happens to their products once in the hands of consumers.

The bill, which regulates the disposal of old TVs, computers and other electronics, looks likely to be passed this month.

Once it’s signed into law it would go into effect in September 2010. Under the current version of the bill, it will be illegal to dispose of computers, TVs, printers, scanners, DVD players, VCRs, fax machines and laptops in landfills. It requires electronics manufacturers to annually recycle electronics that, by weight, compare to 80 percent of their sales of similar items. A fee will be imposed if there is a shortfall between recycled products and sales.

— Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company President Jake Leinenkugel touted the company’s new partnership with the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board in a speech to members of the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce last night in Madison.

Leinenkugel described the partnership as a new effort to pair the craft beers that Leinenkugel’s produces with artisan cheeses made in the state.

He spoke to over 800 members and guests who attended the 57th Annual GMCC dinner at Monona Terrace.  Leinenkugel, who was introduced by his brother, Commerce Secretary Dick Leinenkugel, also discussed the rapid growth of the Chippewa Falls brewing company and the company’s commitment to water conservation efforts in the Chippewa Valley.

— A Senate committee is backing a hike in the state liquor tax to pay for drunken driving reforms.

The state liquor tax would rise by 50 cents per liter, generating about $25 million annually.

Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker supports the tax increase and a spokeswoman says it would be easier to pass than a tax increase on beer.

— The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Foundation is opening the new Wisconsin Museum of Broadcasting today.

The muuseum includes: a new WBA Hall of Fame gallery, a timeline of broadcast history in the United States and Wisconsin, important political debates and The Broadcasters Attic, which is a storage area for old programs and memorabilia presented in still picture and video format.
