— State sales tax collections for the month of December 2008 fell 3.8 percent, or nearly $12 million, over the the same month last year, according to data released by the Department of Revenue.
For the year-to-date, sales tax is down 2.2 percent over the previous year.
Overall GPR collections for December fell 7.4 percent, but year to date collections are up about $45 million, or 0.8 percent.

— Eso-Technologies Inc. in Hartland will receive a $100,000 Technology Venture Fund loan from the Department of Commerce. Commerce has also certified the company as a Qualified New Business Venture eligible for early stage and angel investment under Act 255.

RedPrairie drops Delafield project, staying in Waukesha: RedPrairie Corp. is renewing its lease with Liberty Property Trust at the Crossroads Corporate Park in Waukesha and will not be a anchor tenant in the proposed $66.3 million business park in Delafield that’s being planned by RP Technology Group LLC. RP Technology Group had planned to build its office complex on part of the Robert Lang property south of Interstate 94. RedPrairie was considering plans to lease a 120,000-square-foot office building that would be the anchor of the development on 25 acres at the southeast corner of Highway C and Interstate 94.

Hospital work cutback leads to 160 layoffs: The decision last week to slow down construction of Columbia St. Mary’s new east side hospital has left about 160 tradespeople without work, according to the general contractor. The number of construction workers at the site peaked at 500 about three months ago, but was reduced to about 375 tradespeople as the project advanced, said Pete Richards, the project administrator for general contractor CG Schmidt/Barton Malow JV.

U.S. seal used in inauguration made in Wisconsin: Among the inauguration day stops for President Barack Obama Tuesday was Washington, D.C.’s Capital Hilton, where Obama gave his inaugural address. The 44th president of the U.S. gave the address in front of a giant United States seal, which was made in Milwaukee by the Laser Cutting Inc. firm. The gold seal is 7 feet 4 inches in diameter.

Report: Charter hires advisers for possible bankruptcy filing: Charter Communications Inc. has hired law firm Kirkland & Ellis and investment bank Lazard Ltd. to advise on a possible bankruptcy, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Kirkland’s Rick Cieri is providing counsel, Bloomberg said. If the St. Louis-based cable company decides in favor of bankruptcy, it may file as soon as next week, said one of the people, who declined to be identified because the discussions are private, Bloomberg reported.
