— Experts in economics, education, and entrepreneurship joined key business leaders Monday to chart a course out of the current economic downturn.
“We believe that the way you get out of recessions and the economic doldrums is to grow your way out,” Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce President James Haney told the Wisconsin Way economic development conference.
“Once this economy returns to some normalcy, the biggest issue any of us will face is whether we find enough workers in numbers and the knowledge workers to do the jobs that will be built,” Haney said.
Educators such as Technical Colleges System President Dan Clancy and UW System Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Rebecca Martin said their institutions were at the front lines of preparing young people for the high tech and health care jobs opening up as baby boomers retire.
“We customize our instruction for business and industry and serve thousands of businesses though our customized training programs, and we work with the apprenticeship programs to provide the related structure for those programs,” serving up to 72,000 students each year, Clancy said. “ We are full to overflowing.”
