— Gov. Jim Doyle says this century could see Wisconsin thrive by focusing on water technology the way it moved to focus on the dairy industry in the last century.

“We have a resource like no one else. Right now the demand for fresh water is dramatic,” Doyle said. “We have water here. We know how to withdraw water, we know how to use water, we know how to clean water, we know how to return water and we have a lot of businesses that are involved in that process.”

Doyle discussed the industry with more than 200 attendees at the Milwaukee 7 Water Council’s sold-out Water Summit III at Discovery World in Milwaukee. He also announced plans to travel to Israel in the fall to speak at a conference on water and environmental technology.

— The state Medicaid program will receive $923,231 as part of a $95.5 million multi-state settlement with Aventis Pharmaceutical, AG J.B. Van Hollen announced.

The settlement resolves allegations that between 1995 and 2000 Aventis and its corporate predecessors knowingly misreported best prices for anti-inflammatory nasal sprays.

— 9to5, National Association of Working Women announced plans to file an appeal of a Milwaukee judge’s decision striking down a paid sick leave ordinance for the city.

9to5 led a successful petition drive last year to get a binding referendum that companies provide paid sick leave to their employees working in Milwaukee. The measure passed and was challenged by the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce.

Circuit Court Judge Thomas Cooper struck the law down in June, saying that a provision regarding paid time off for legal proceedings and relocation in cases of sexual assault and domestic violence were not related to the broader purpose of the ordinance and should have been addressed as a separate ballot item.

The group defended the provision in a press release announcing its appeal today and called upon the city of Milwaukee, also a defendant in the suit, to join the appeal.
