— Democrats in the state Senate have introduced a plan geared toward job creation and economic development.

The plan would increase grants available through the Accelerate Wisconsin program from $5.5 million to $8.5 million next year. It would also add $1 million to the Wisconsin Development Fund and pump more funding into job training programs.

The bill would also fund a position that would help businesses navigate the state’s permitting and approval process.

— In a new BizOpinion column, the Wisconsin Technology Council’s Tom Still says it looks to him like the state’s move to keep Mercury Marine jobs here was worth the investment of state and local money.

Still says Wisconsin may have kept Mercury Marine in the state at a “cost-per-job” that falls somewhere on the lower end of the national incentives scale.

— With Veterans Day coming up tomorrow, AT&T is planning to honor veterans by inviting people to recycle cell phones in its 21 stores in the state.

AT&T’s recycling program supports Cell Phones for Soldiers, a charity that uses recycling proceeds to buy and send free phone cards to military members stationed away from home. A statewide holiday donation drive kicks off today with an event at the Veterans Museum in Madison.

— Wisconsin foods are in demand worldwide but the cost of international marketing may be a barrier for some Wisconsin companies.

But the state agriculture department says companies can tap into international markets with cost-sharing from the Food Export Association of the Midwest. That group has a program to reimburse small companies for up to half of promotional expenses like tradeshow fees, brochures, advertising, and label changes.

This year 22 state companies received a total of nearly $1 million in reimbursements and registration is now open for next year.
