— Three Wisconsin congressmen have sent a letter to U.S. trade representative Ron Kirk in support of U.S. marine manufacturers.

U.S. Sens. Russ Feingold and Herb Kohl and U.S. Rep. Tom Petri ask Kirk to engage with Brazil after the World Trade Organization allowed that country to impose retaliatory duties against U.S. imports, specifically outboard style marine engines, over a dispute regarding cotton.

In the letter, the legislators wrote, “the inclusion of marine product manufacturers as a target of retaliation represents yet another blow against an industry that has suffered more than most during the current economic downturn.”

— In a new BizOpinion column, Bill Kraus argues that the state needs a full-fledged venture capital program funded by the state investment board on behalf of the thousands of people who have retired or will retire from their jobs in state and local government and education.

Wisconsin has the money, he says, but what Wisconsin needs is the will and the expertise and the guts to stand up to the inevitable criticism that will come from such a program.
