— Three Milwaukee-area universities are teaming up to create a national center for energy research. It’s the first time the the colleges of engineering at UW-Milwaukee, Marquette University and Milwaukee School of Engineering have collaborated on a major initiative.

Seven projects are already underway at the new Southeastern Wisconsin Energy Technology Research Center thanks to $200,000 dollars in federal funding and $500,000 from regional industries and foundations.

The projects include research into new materials for rechargeable batteries and a look at using algae to produce biofuel from coal plant emissions.

— A national business magazine for women has named Milwaukee’s Manpower and Appleton’s Thrivent Financial for Lutherans two of the country’s top companies for women.

PINK Magazine’s annual ranking rewards organizations that make women’s advancement a part of everyday business. The Wisconsin companies were two of 15 to take top honors this year.

— The Commerce Department released some details of Gov. Jim Doyle’s trade mission to Israel Nov. 16-20.

The mission will focus on three industries that the state says offer great promise for increasing exports to Israel: life sciences, water technology, and agriculture.
