— Kohl’s Corp. reported today that total sales for November increased 7.1 percent from a year ago, with same-store sales up 3.3 percent.

— Gov. Jim Doyle is planning to travel to Denmark later this month for the United Nations Climate Change Conference. 

Doyle plans to talk about Wisconsin’s work in clean-energy jobs, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He’s also due to meet with business leaders to discuss opportunities for green companies to expand their operations into Wisconsin.

— Families USA says the end of a federal subsidy could mean unemployed workers won’t be able to afford the health insurance commonly known as COBRA.

This week a subsidy included in the federal stimulus package begins to expire for unemployed workers throughout the county.

Families USA says the average COBRA payment in Wisconsin will increase by $710 a month, pushing the monthly cost over $1,100. Health care advocates are pushing for Congress to extend the subsidy.

— State recyclers are praising a new law that will prohibit the disposal of used oil filters starting next December.

State reports had found the recycling rate for oil filters had reached a plateau and that stricter requirements were needed.

Supporters say the new law could keep hundreds of thousands of gallons of waste oil out of state landfills.

JT Packard to cut 300 jobs in Verona: JT Packard & Associates Inc. plans to close its two facilities in Verona, leaving 300 workers without jobs. The company, an electrical power systems contractor and manufacturer of appliance cords, plans to close its plants by Feb. 1, 2010, according to a mass layoff notice filed Dec. 2 with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

Georgia-Pacific to lay off 158 workers at Day Street mill: Georgia-Pacific’s decision to lay off 158 workers at its Day Street tissue-converting facility in Green Bay is unexpected and devastating, according to a union leader at the mill. “You see (layoffs) happening all around you, and you are always hopeful it doesn’t strike your workplace,” said Dennis Delie, president of United Steelworkers Local 213. “It’s basically an overcapacity issue.”

Miller Electric Manufacturing Co. cutting 35 jobs in Appleton: The company, a subsidiary of Glenview, Ill.-based Illinois Tool Works and maker of welding equipment and accessories, announced Wednesday it was cutting 35 jobs, which includes 27 plant and eight office positions, effective Jan. 1. The reduction represents about 3 percent of the company’s Appleton area work force, which now stands at about 1,200 workers.
