— The Dow Jones opens today above 10,000 for the third consecutive week. It gained 38 points on the week to open today at 10,318.

The WisBusiness index of Wisconsin stocks had a steady week, losing just five points to open at 1,800.

That loss came despite a nearly 20 percent hike in the stock price of Bon-Ton stores. The gain for the parent company of Boston Store and Younkers came as it reported improved earnings for the quarter.

There are no companies with Wisconsin ties reporting their earnings in this holiday shortened week.

— The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation says this year’s Thanksgiving meal will cost $3.84 less than last year. All items surveyed saw decreases with the exception of peas, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie filling.

In the Farm Bureau’s 18th annual informal survey for the traditional holiday meal for a family of eight, the cost of this year’s feast is $38.53, compared to $42.37 for last year’s meal.

Since this time last year there has been a significant drop in global demand for some American agricultural products such as dairy. This year, energy prices are far below their 2008 levels. Dairy prices and global demand surged in 2007 and through most of 2008 and now those conditions are reversed. The lower demand and cheaper energy are the primary factors behind this year’s decrease.

— As the green business movement gains momentum, trained workers are needed, and some sort of guide through the growing list of agencies and companies involved in it becomes necessary.

The Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA), located in Custer, outside of Stevens Point, with an office in the Milwaukee area, is trying to provide those and other services to this movement.

MREA actually has been at the “green biz” work for quite some time. “The organization was formed in 1990 and grew out of an Energy Fair, which was started by a group of people interested in renewable energy and the environment,” said Gina Sinisi, communications coordinator for the MREA. “We’ve grown considerably since then.”

The organization currently has more than 3,200 active members, representing 39 states and three foreign countries.
