NFIB attacks plan to expand sales tax

Bill G. Smith, state director of the National Federation of
Independent Business/Wisconsin, regarding a recent proposal to eliminate exemptions
to the statewide sales tax on professional services:

“While proponents claim to be ‘closing loopholes’ in current sales tax laws,
they are really advocating for a drastic tax increase in disguise. By eliminating
the selected exemptions for services, this proposal unfairly targets Wisconsin’s
small-business owners who, unlike big businesses, don’t have the resources to
employ in-house departments to handle essential services such as accounting,
payroll, legal, janitorial, and advertising services.  It flies in the face of
job-creation and economic growth to unfairly target the small businesses that create
two-thirds of all the net new jobs in our state.  This is a bad idea that will make
it even more difficult for small businesses to be created, to grow and to prosper in
our state.
