Madison, WI-When Amber Price of Madison began creating personalized
superhero capes for kids, she had no idea what a hit they would quickly
become.
“I thought, ‘what a fun idea to have a cape with the child’s initial on
it,’” says Price, “but I never dreamed that kids and parents across the
nation would get so excited by this product.”
Price, a stay at home mom of two boys, ages 2 ½ and 7 months, started a

selling handmade baby and children’s items in February 2004 hoping to
make a little extra money to support the family. One day, while
brainstorming for new products that she could make out of her home,
Price came up with the idea of creating personalized superhero capes
with the child’s initial on the shield.
“I grew up with younger brothers and I have spent enough time around
children to know that superhero capes are popular among kids,” explains
Price. “I’ve heard of moms tying towels or blankets around their kids’
necks just so they could pretend they are Superman or Wonder Woman.”
The superhero capes, offered in four colors and two sizes, have been
sold for kids’ birthday party favors, Halloween costumes and to large
corporations for use in business meetings and projects. The capes were
also featured at a small children’s Christmas shop in Houston this past
year.
After selling the capes for just over a year, the demand for them became
more than Price could keep up with on her own. She found a local
manufacturer on the internet, who now sews the superhero capes, leaving
Price to add the initials and ship the capes to customers within the
U.S. and Canada.
“It’s so much fun to see my business succeed,” smiles Price. “I started
completely from scratch. I didn’t even know how to create a website or
sell a product but little by little I’ve learned to build a successful
business. It feels great to see happy customers using my capes and to
know that kids out there enjoy them so much.”
The superhero cape line has expanded to include birthday party packs
featuring invitations and party favors. “After such a successful year in
2005,” says Price, “I’m excited to see what 2006 will bring.”
