MARSHFIELD – Security Health Plan of Wisconsin, Inc., has named Eric Quivers, M.D., FAAP, FACC, as its chief medical officer.

Quivers, a board certified pediatric cardiologist, joined Security Health Plan after serving as medical director-physical health at Amerigroup Iowa, an Anthem Company, in West Des Moines. He has worked at a number of health insurance companies helping establish and lead medical management and quality assurance programs. He has experience at health plans offering coverage through the Affordable Care Act.

“Dr. Quivers has a deep dedication to many of the same core values we have long held at Security Health Plan, such as identifying members who need additional assistance with chronic conditions to improve their overall health. He will be involved with ensuring that our members have access to the high quality care they need, with the right provider, in the right location,” said Julie Brussow, Security Health Plan CEO. “With his experience in commercial and government insurance programs, including cooperatives offering Affordable Care Act plans, Dr. Quivers is an excellent fit as our chief medical officer.”

Quivers earned his bachelor degree in biology and chemistry from Morehouse College in Atlanta. He completed his medical degree and pediatric residency at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C., then completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In addition to his medical training, Dr. Quivers has a graduate certificate in leadership development from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Quivers was a staff pediatrician at Park West Medical Center in Baltimore, and served in numerous pediatric cardiology roles at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He has held many health insurance medical leadership roles including medical director at Dean Health Plan in Madison, Wisconsin, and chief medical officer at Consumers Choice Health Plan in Knoxville, Tennessee. Dr. Quivers has held faculty appointments at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and George Washington University School of Medicine, and has authored numerous journal articles, book chapters and presentations related to his research and education accomplishments.

“Across the nation, one of the greatest challenges in health care is to predict the future of health care. One of the greatest strengths of Security Health Plan is that it is part of an integrated health system: Marshfield Clinic Health System,” Quivers said. “The partnership across the organization, and with providers outside our organization, has to be strong. We have to work together to continue to provide the outstanding care that our members and patients are receiving today, and to see where we can make changes to provide more comprehensive care to those in need. We may need to be more innovative to be able to meet those needs.”

One of the things that attracted him was Marshfield Clinic Health System’s investment in improving the dental health of the community.

“We run across people all the time who have dental problems,” Quivers said. “There have been links between dental health and other diseases such as heart disease. I am very happy and feel privileged to have this opportunity to be part of an organization that cares about taking care of people in that way.”

Quivers is a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and Baltimore.
