June Marks ‘Entrepreneurs and Research Week’ in Wisconsin

With three business and technology conferences in the span of four days, Gov. Jim Doyle has declared the first week in June to be “Entrepreneurs and Research Week” in Wisconsin. The week begins with the two-day Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Conference, followed by a nanotechnology conference at UW-Madison then a biomedical conference at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. June 1-2: Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Conference
Hyatt Regency Milwaukee, 333 W. Kilbourn.
The Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Conference is a “how-to” conference focused on giving entrepreneurs the tool they need to start and grow businesses that will fit with Wisconsin’s high-growth, knowledge-based economy.

Jim Rygiel, Oscar winner for visual effects on “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” will speak at noon on June 2. The conference will also feature:
• Winners of the first Wisconsin Governor’s Business Plan Contest, which will offer $120,000 in cash and in-kind services prizes.
• Presentation of the first “Seize the Day” award for entrepreneurial activity.
• Seminars by top managers from federal research and development grant programs
• Other nationally known keynote speakers with stories to inspire and inform entrepreneurs.
• More than two-dozen panel discussions or special presentations designed to give entrepreneurs the tools they need to be successful.

June 3: Bionanotechnology: Opportunities in the Bionanotech Convergence Zone
UW-Madison College of Engineering
A featured speaker is Dr. Jeffrey Schloss from the National Institutes of Health, one of the leaders in the national nanotechnology initiative. Nanotechnology is based on the manipulation of individual atoms and molecules to build structures at the “nano” scale, which is about 1/80,000 of the diameter of a human hair. Other speakers include Barbara Israel , COO of Madison’s Platypus Technologies; Steve Crosby, publisher and editor of Small Times magazine and Eric Isaacs, director of the Center for Nanoscale Materials at the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago.

June 4: Great Lakes Biomedical Conference
Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee
The theme of this year’s conference is “From Vision to Reality”, and will focus on emerging technologies under investigation at the major leading research institutions in the Midwest, and strategies for driving these technologies to the marketplace most effectively.

Historically organized by faculty of Marquette University, Medical College of Wisconsin, UW-Milwaukee, and the Milwaukee School of Engineering, this year’s conference has been expanded to include 17 major research institutions from throughout the Midwest. This year’s event will feature high-level industry speakers from the fields of biotech, biomedical engineering, devices/imaging and more.
