Healthy Kale-based Product Wins Judges Over on Taste and Originality

Bree Schumacher from Waukesha has been named the Hottest Kitchen Entrepreneur Challenge for her concept Skinny Dinner Starter: Superfood Italian. The Challenge is sponsored by Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) and by Reliable Water Services a local provider of commercial water heaters, boilers and water softeners.

The finalists were judged at a tasting event which took place yesterday at Cuisine, MATC’s student-run restaurant, and Schumacher won top honors for her kale-based dinner starter which makes a variety of delicious vitamin-packed dinners. Schumacher took home the grand prize of $2,500 in seed money from Reliable Water Services to help start her business; a comprehensive entrepreneurial consultation package from MATC; over $500 worth of professional cookware and professional knives from Boelter Superstore and a two-hour private meeting with food industry executives serving on FaB Milwaukee’s Advisory Council.

“I am absolutely thrilled and humbled to be chosen as the winner for this contest. It has been such an exciting process, and I can’t wait to delve into bringing the Skinny Dinner Starter-Superfood Italian to busy moms in Wisconsin and across the country,” said Schumacher.

The other finalists include:

* Joanne Sabir – Milwaukee, Wis. – The Juice Kitchen – concept to develop a completely vegan raw juice and vegetarian food bar with the goal of providing healthy, tasty food for Milwaukee central city residents.

* Ann Allen – Oshkosh, Wis. –Spirit of Spelt a line of traditional cookies, individually packaged and all made with the grain spelt. As a delicious, old world grain, spelt bakery products offer an alternative for individuals who have sensitivity to gluten products.

“It was a close race as all the ideas were strong but ultimately we felt that Skinny Dinner Starter had the whole package from taste and originality to the beginnings of a strong business plan,” said contest judge Lynn Sbonik, owner of Beans & Barley Deli, Market & Full Service Café in Milwaukee. “We wish all three finalists the best as they pursue their dreams of food entrepreneurship.”

Other judges for the contest included Justin Aprahamian, Chef de Cuisine for Sanford Restaurant, Andrea Marquez-Paquin and Andrew Paquin, owners of La Luna; George Flees, general manager of Parkside 23 restaurant and Peter Gottsacker, president of Wixon, Inc.
