MADISON | MILWAUKEE | MINNEAPOLIS – DeWitt Ross & Stevens S.C. announced attorney Louis Butler, a 1977 UW Law Alumnus, was chosen by UW Madison’s graduating law students, through a multi-stage voting process, to serve as its Hooding Ceremony Keynote Speaker.
The annual hooding celebration is a special recognition ceremony for students receiving law degrees. It is similar to a graduation ceremony in that faculty and students are dressed in academic regalia. Faculty members place the J.D. doctoral hood over the head of the graduate to signify his or her success in completing their law degree.
Joining Butler on stage will be Professor Miriam Seifter as the faculty speaker. Tomás Clausen and Reginald Thedford Jr. will be the student speakers from the third-year class and Carlos Arrau Miranda will be the student speaker representing the graduate students. The Law School Hooding ceremony is in addition to, and does not replace, the UW Commencement held at Camp Randall.
Butler was the first African American to serve on the Wisconsin Supreme Court and participated in decisions that had a significant impact on Wisconsin’s legal landscape. He was the first Public Defender in Wisconsin’s history to argue before the United States Supreme Court in McCoy v. Wisconsin Court of Appeals, 486 U.S. 429 (1988) and was nominated by President Barack Obama to be a United States District Court Judge for the Western District of Wisconsin.
