Bachmann Construction, Madison, earned a first place Build Wisconsin award for the expansion at Lakewood Plaza, corner of Sherman Avenue and Commercial, Maple Bluff. Lakewood Plaza II won in the new construction, commercial projects category. The awards, sponsored by Associated General Contractors of Wisconsin, are based on craftsmanship, meeting difficult challenges, community and client impact, and sustainable practices and innovation

Bachmann won the award for turning a blighted past into a bright future at a critical entranceway to Maple Bluff. The project involved remediation work and demolition of former eyesore buildings on the site including the Inferno Nightclub and a vacated pet store, which both contained asbestos. Contaminated soil had to be removed. Overhead telephone lines and poles were replaced with underground equipment.

The L-shaped 13,000 square foot masonry and stucco building features a 30-foot tall turret, prominent on the corner of Sherman Avenue and Commercial. It is at the entrance of the Bear and Bottle gastro pub, which opened last spring. The building has an additional 8000 square feet for future retail or offices and is across the parking lot from Manna Café and Bakery and Jacobson’s Brother’s Deli plus other retail outlets.
