Green Bay, Wisconsin — Schneider is known on America’s highways and byways for its bright orange equipment, but there’s another hue deeply ingrained in the company’s culture: green. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently awarded Schneider, a premier provider of transportation and logistics, with its SmartWay Excellence Award for the eighth time. Schneider has also been named to the first EPA SmartWay High Performers list.

The SmartWay Excellence Award recognizes Schneider for outstanding leadership in freight supply chain energy and environmental performance. The award is the EPA’s highest recognition for organizations that significantly reduce the environmental impacts of the freight sector and is reserved for the top 2 percent of SmartWay’s 3,000 members. Schneider has met or exceeded the EPA’s fuel reduction and environmental performance goals to earn the recognition.

“Since 2004, EPA and the business community have collaborated through the SmartWay Partnership to reduce the economic and environmental costs of goods movement, a vital sector of our national economy,” said Christopher Grundler, director of the EPA’s Office of Transportation & Air Quality. “This year’s award-winning freight carriers, shippers and third-party logistics companies demonstrate that they can move more goods more miles, while using less fuel. These firms are not only serving the growing needs of their customers – they are also doing their part to keep our environment clean and protect human health.”

This year, the EPA also debuted its SmartWay High Performers list, which recognizes transportation companies that are a step ahead in meeting the challenges of the sustainable goods movement. Schneider was recognized for its fuel efficiency and reduction of carbon emissions and was also one of only nine multimodal carriers – which utilize different modes to have less impact on the environment – named as a High Performer. Fewer than 10 percent of all SmartWay carriers operate fleets efficient enough to make the SmartWay High Performer list.

“For nearly 40 years, Schneider has focused on fuel efficiency, freight consolidation and energy conservation,” said Steve Matheys, executive vice president and chief administrative officer at Schneider. “We invest so much into testing and implementing green technologies because an energy-efficient fleet makes sense for our customers, our business and the environment. Schneider’s practices stand as an example for shippers to make smart, informed decisions for their business and shareholders.”

As part of its sustainable mission, Schneider has spec’d dozens of fuel-efficient features, and even more are being tested in order to continually improve the environmentally friendly fleet. Schneider suggests that shippers taking the first step toward building a greener supply chain learn what to look for in a transportation provider by checking out the white paper “The Importance of Being Green.”

As a charter member of the SmartWay Transport Partnership, Schneider joined forces with the EPA and other businesses committed to reducing the supply chain’s effect on the environment by improving efficiency and supply chain sustainability. Since the program began in 2004, Schneider and its fellow SmartWay partners have saved a total of 170.3 million barrels of oil and 24.9 billion dollars in fuel costs, while reducing carbon dioxide by 72.8 million metric tons, particulate matter by 59,000 tons and nitrogen oxide by 1,458,000 tons. This is the equivalent to eliminating annual energy use in over six million homes.
