Datica launches website to help out developers

Datica, a Madison-based cloud platform and data services company for the health care industry, just launched a website to help developers bring applications to market.

The Digital Health Success Framework is meant to provide a step-by-step guide for launching digital health products, and provides timelines surrounding five core concepts: compliance, infrastructure, application, integration and pilot organizations.

The five timelines go up until about the four-year mark, with detailed information placed at points where it will become most relevant to a developer.

“Unlike other industries where a pathway to success is straightforward, the health care industry has unique considerations not found elsewhere,” said Mark Olschesky, Datica’s chief data officer. “The DHSF takes those specific complexities, details the timelines and benchmarks for each, then simplifies the success process in an intelligent way that developers can clearly comprehend.”

According to a 2015 report from Accenture, half of all digital health startups will fail within two years of launch.

Datica says its mission is to reduce that rate.

Compliance is the first and arguably most important topic covered in the framework, because without HIPAA compliance, companies are severely limited in the information they can use.

HIPAA legislation protects data privacy and security in the medical field. Whenever a digital health product has to handle protected information like name, phone number or address, HIPAA has rules for how that information can be handled.

And a lot goes into these considerations; aside from administrative policies and internal information access rules, digital health products have to demonstrate solid encryption, recovery methods for disasters and the resilience of the operating system itself.

The guide touches on a lot of important information for developers: Business Associate Agreements, which outline risk in relationships between health care organizations; HITRUST, an industry initiative which aims to make it easier to comply with HIPAA by providing informative resources for rule-following; plus Electronic Health Records or EHRs — and that’s just scratching the surface.

Joe Kirgues, co-founder of gener8tor, says the nationally ranked startup accelerator has seen many digital health companies struggle to understand the complexities of obstacles in their way.

“Datica’s Digital Health Success Framework can help organizations understand the unique considerations required for new products, which will help the healthcare ecosystem only get better at delivering stronger patient outcomes through new innovation,” Kirgues said.
